MapMyFitness gears up for job growth at newly established Austin HQ

MapMyFitness Inc. is racing toward the Nov. 8 official opening of its new Austin headquarters, where it plans to add four to six employees this year and 10 to 15 next year. The company is setting up shop in Austin with at least three employees.

The startup currently employs 34 people, mostly in Denver, which had been its home base since the company was founded in 2007. A $5 million investment earlier this year from Austin Ventures prompted the headquarters move to about 3,000 square feet in downtown Austin.

Robin Thurston (photo), co-founder and CEO of MapMyFitness, says positions the company will be filling in Austin are in engineering, including mobile and web development; marketing; sales; and administration. Now, the company has seven available IT and marketing positions in Austin listed on its website.

The startup’s suite of websites—MapMyFitness.com, MapMyRide.com, MapMyRun.com, MapMyTri.com, MapMyWalk.com, MapMyHike.com and MapMyMountain.com—are fitness-oriented social networks. The company also offers fitness-related apps for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry devices.

Fitness enthusiasts from around the world upload their fitness data through one of the company’s websites or mobile apps between 30,000 and 60,000 times each day. The MapMyFitness community boasts more than 2 million members.

Thurston says the company seeks employees who are energetic, fitness-focused and passionate about technology. Perks of working at MapMyFitness include $500 a year for fitness-related items and paid time off for volunteering at fitness events.
